Jim serves as Vice Chairman of Washington State Republican Party (WSRP). He also serves as Chair of the WSRP’s Political Operations Committee and a member of its Coastal Caucus Task Force. In addition to his involvement with the WSRP, he is Chairman of the Grays Harbor County Republican Party and a board member of the Republican Liberty Caucus/WA.
He is a 1986 cum laude graduate of Amherst College (Amherst, MA). He lives in Aberdeen, WA, with his wife Jamie—who is a licensed architect and member of the Aberdeen School Board. They have five children (ages 10 to 24) and are gradually restoring an old timber baron’s Victorian home in the Broadway Hill neighborhood.
Jim coaches the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams for his children’s elementary school—something he’s done for nearly 10 years.
He owns Silver Lake Publishing, which specializes in technical publications and manuals aimed primarily at professionals in the insurance, risk management and financial services industries. According to Walsh:
Silver Lake’s specialty is risk and insurance. We do some consumer and popular books that you can find online or at your local bookstore; but the largest part of our list is technical publications that we produce on CD-ROMs and other electronic media.
Silver Lake was an early adopter of and helped develop standards for electronic book publishing. It is one of the few independent presses that works directly with major ebook platforms like Amazon/Kindle, B&N/Nook, Sony Digital Media, GooglePlay and EBSCO.
Jim formed Silver Lake in 1998 by acquiring several divisions of California-based Merritt Publishing, a company where he had been an employee since 1992. In addition to running the company, he has written several books–on topics including: managing workers’ comp insurance, understanding risk in everyday life and avoiding financial swindles.
His work has been excerpted in magazines such as Reader’s Digest, Money, Whole Earth Review and Inc. It has been reviewed and cited in many newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Chicago Tribune. His books have been recognized or received awards from the American Risk and Insurance Association (ARIA), Foreword magazine and the Publisher’s Marketing Association.
