As the daughter of a World War II Veteran and an incredibly strong, driven, Korean immigrant mother Susanna was raised to know that initiative has no prerequisite. Susanna moved to Washington after her father retired from military service to the city of Lakewood, where her sisters and she grew up and graduated high school.
Susanna later joined the Air Force at JBLM as a Medic and in 2006 & 2007 deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. “The memories I have of our service men and women coming back from battle will always be with me: soldiers with limbs separated from their bodies, yet with an optimism and American fighting spirit that tragedy could not waiver.” Susanna later became an Army wife, and the journey took her all over the world and across the country. “Being a military spouse was challenging and rewarding. Not knowing if the last time I saw my husband was going to be the last time.” Susanna channeled her worry into her career and education.
She used her Post 911 GI Bill to earn an MBA in Healthcare Administration and Master’s in Political Science that segued to where she is today. “For 22 years, I’ve worked in the academic, business, and operational fields of healthcare. I’ve spent the last ten years focusing on my passion within research to protect patients, improve clinical outcomes and expand healthcare options.” Part of Susanna’s post-military work has been with “Freedom Sisters,” to amplify the voices of women veterans. “We elevate and empower the voices and true stories of women during and after service by providing an uncensored platform.” Susanna is also a Chair for the Seattle chapter of Women in Bioscience, and mentors current and future small business owners.
She currently resides in Dupont, just a few blocks from her parents. “I’m excited to serve as your Representative in Olympia. I have never walked away from a challenge. I’ll approach our local issues in a practical, common sense and collaborative manner that ignores the partisan tribalism that has gripped our capital. You and your family will be an extension of my own.” – Susanna Keilman
